Our press is the dm, our beating the press is our dm, working as a team, passing and moving, ( Maslov, Stein, Shankly, Michels )… cannot have the luxury of a limited ‘dm’ in the modern game.
In your next watch, look how few, if any, 50/50’s or opportunities to ‘patrol that area’ occur.
I wasn't trying to imply that one player or one position would fix the issues we have - the issue is clearly McGregor doing several positions in one role that he is ill-suited for and that we have been crying out for a player that links the defence with midfield and also protects the defence when opponents are countering. Similar mould to what Brown and Lennon was - that McGregor has been shoehorned into being by successive managers when he isn't that type of player.
Player in the same guise as Rodri, Declan Rice, Caicedo, Vitinha or Neves. All are number 6-type players in the modern game playing for top level clubs.
We don't press properly, we struggle to beat opposition presses and panic all the time resulting in lost possession or worse conceding goals. We pass too slowly and are predictable when we do. That comes down to not only the players' decision making, but also the management failing.
I wouldn't count on it. Remember Celtic chased Michel-Ange Balikwisha for well over a year before finally signing him from Royal Antwerp. Look how that turned out.
