Rod Stewart has sailed away from our values - Farage support betrays Celtic
Rod Stewart's endorsement of Nigel Farage is a stark betrayal of Celtic FC's anti-racist and inclusive values, proving his famed allegiance is nothing more than commercial opportunism.
Every time Rod Stewart opens his mouth about politics, it makes me sick that this ageing rocker has anything to do with our club. For years, he’s cultivated this image as a true Celtic fan, draped in the green and white, belting out club anthems, soaking up the adulation. Certain fans in our support love it, the club’s hierarchy definitely love it, and the media just can’t help themselves when they catch him on camera.
But his recent endorsement of Nigel Farage and Reform UK isn't just a wrong turn; it’s a direct slap in the face to everything Celtic stands for. It's proof that this ageing rocker doesn't get our club, and that his supposed love for Celtic is nothing more than a convenient, money-making facade.
Let's be clear: Celtic Football Club was founded by Brother Walfrid to alleviate poverty among Glasgow’s Irish immigrant community. Its very soul is rooted in charity, social justice, and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity. We are a club open to all, regardless of race, religion, or background. Our history is one of solidarity with the oppressed, a beacon of hope in challenging times. This ethos, this fundamental decency, is what makes Celtic "A Club Like No Other."
Contrast that with Nigel Farage. His entire career has been a long, sickening litany of right-wing politics, built on fear and division, particularly when it comes to refugees and immigrants. Farage has repeatedly used inflammatory language, describing arrivals as an invasion, demonising desperate asylum seekers, and advocating for policies that would slam the door shut on those fleeing war and persecution. His infamous breaking point poster, depicting a queue of non-white migrants, was a stark illustration of his bigotry. This isn't just about economic policy; it's about a dehumanising worldview that targets the vulnerable – the very people Celtic was founded to help.
So, when Rod Stewart, who claims to be one of us, casually dismisses his immense wealth (it doesn’t really touch me) while simultaneously urging support for a man whose policies would further marginalise those less fortunate, it exposes a shocking hypocrisy. His political hop-scotching from Tory to Labour to now Reform isn't a sign of thoughtful political engagement; it's the opportunistic dance of someone chasing relevance, happy to align with whatever populist wave offers him airtime.
His jaw-droppingly tone-deaf comment about the Gaza Strip - comparing a horrific genocide to the UK's domestic political woes - further solidifies the view that he is utterly detached from the real world.
This is the same guy who wanted Celtic to give Rangers a ‘Guard of Honour’ after winning to Covid League in 2021.
This isn't a political argument. This is about core values. Rod Stewart's support for Farage is a clear, undeniable sign that he simply does not understand Celtic, it’s history, and what it means to be a Celtic fan. His fandom feels like an elaborate act, a brand he deploys whenever there's a concert to sell or a media appearance to make, capitalising on the loyalty and passion of a fanbase whose principles he fundamentally contradicts. He pays lip service to the green and white when it suits his wallet, but his actions betray a complete disregard for the spirit and soul of our club and its history.
The Celtic faithful cannot and should not tolerate this blatant stain on our values. Rod Stewart has made his bed with those who seek to divide and exclude. It’s time for us to turn our backs on him, unequivocally. We deserve better, and more importantly, our club's ethos demands it.
As the Green Brigade has previously said, ‘F**k Off Rod’.
I love being educated. I will carry on supporting my dad’s team - Real Madrid- but, from now on, I will cheer for Celtic too
