Beyond the Pitch: Introducing 'The Citizen'
The Citizen will be a dedicated space on andymuirhead.com to explore political matters, particularly those concerning Scotland.
For those of you who've followed the site for a while, you’ll know my focus has been on Celtic and Scottish Football. But football, for all its supposed neutrality, has always been inextricably linked to the world beyond the stadium gates.
Despite what governing bodies might wish, football isn't played in a vacuum. It reflects society, and often, it's a microcosm of political currents, whether subtle or overt. We've seen it throughout history, from protests on the terraces to national teams embodying a nation's aspirations. To ignore this vital connection is to miss a huge part of the story.
That's why I'm introducing a new section on the site called The Citizen, where we'll step off the pitch and into the wider world. For those who know me, my support for Scottish Independence isn't a secret, and I've long been a keen observer and occasional contributor to the discourse around it. While the majority of the content will remain firmly focused on football, The Citizen will be a space to explore political issues, particularly those affecting Scotland.
Just as I will continue to focus on the issues at hand in football, I will do likewise with Politics that affect Scotland.
So, while you can still expect the same football coverage you've come to enjoy, I hope you will check out The Citizen section for a different kind of conversation. Let's explore how Scotland and the rest of the world outside the ninety minutes shapes the game we love so much.
